Online Lessons
When you can’t get to my New York City studio, we can work together using FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype.
Please use a second device to play back piano tracks while singing. One device is used for the connection (desktop, laptop, iPad, etc.), and another to play back accompaniment tracks (iPhone, iPod, etc.)
Here are a few tips:
First of all, use the best Internet Wi-Fi connection you can, and get as close to the router as possible. If you can plug your laptop directly into the router, all the better.
Disconnect other programs or apps that might interfere with our Wi-Fi connection. While Zoom Video Conferencing is best for groups, either FaceTime or Skype are fine when it’s just two people.
Zoom Audio Settings
Besides making sure you have the latest version of the Zoom software installed, there are some audio settings that should be changed for voice lessons. By default, Zoom is configured for talking, not singing.
Open “Audio Settings” in Zoom:
UNCHECK the box next to “Automatically adjust microphone volume” (right below input volume). The input volume slider can be set to about halfway.
√ Check the box next to “Join audio by computer when joining a meeting”
Click “Advanced” Button (bottom corner of audio settings):
√ Check the box next to “show in-meeting option...”
Change “Suppress Persistent Background Noise” from Auto to Disable.
Change “Suppress Intermittent Background Noise” from Auto to Disable.
Be sure “Echo Cancellation” is set to Auto
During our meeting, look in the upper corner:
If you see “Turn ON Original Sound,” click it.
If you see “Turn OFF Original Sound,” leave it.

LESSONS AND EXPECTATIONS
Teacher Commitment | The teacher is committed to providing high quality, enjoyable and productive lessons for students in a positive learning environment. Lessons are custom-tailored to the student’s individual learning styles, musical interests and personal goals. The teacher will regularly communicate and collaborate with students and parents to provide the best musical education for each student.
Student Commitment | To foster steady progress and growth, it is essential that students commit to consistently and fully participating in their weekly lessons, building practice time into their daily routine, and achieving the specific goals as discussed during each weekly lesson.
WEEKLY LESSONS
Lesson Length | Weekly private lessons are offered in 30, 45 or 60-minute sessions. For many students, 45-minute lessons are ideal to cover the range of pieces, exercises and assignments for a successful week of practice and progress. Younger beginners and those who would do better with shorter lessons are offered 30-minute lessons. Students who would benefit from longer lessons to cover a greater abundance and depth of material and those looking to progress at a faster rate are offered 60-minute lessons. The teacher will determine the best lesson length for each student during the first lesson, and will reassess throughout the course of the student’s musical journey, to ensure each student has the best opportunity to thrive.
No-shows | If the teacher arrives for a lesson and the student is not there, for any reason, the lesson is considered missed and the teacher may leave. As a courtesy, the teacher may choose to wait, with consideration to the weather and waiting conditions, for up to 15 minutes after the lesson start time.
Discontinuing Lessons | There are no refunds provided upon discontinuing lessons. The teacher requests the courtesy of one month’s prior notice, but also respects the student’s right to end lessons at any time. Ideally, this decision is made thoughtfully with plenty of discussion between the student, parent and teacher so that lessons can cease with a positive sense of closure.
Parent Commitment | Parents play a crucial role in ensuring students commit to their lessons progress. Please enquire directly about routine practice for our weekly lessons.
Lesson Time | When a student enrolls in lessons, a weekly lesson time is reserved exclusively for that individual student. Students are expected to prioritize this weekly commitment. If, at some point, the student would like a lesson time change, it may be requested, but due to the teacher’s limited availability, changes can only be accommodated if there is an opening or another student willing to switch.
Parent Commitment | Parents play a crucial role in ensuring students commit to their lessons progress. Please enquire directly about routine practice for our weekly lessons.
Lesson Calendar | Lessons run by the school calendar, from September to June. If school is out of session due to a holiday, vacation or inclement weather, lessons will not be held that day.
Missing Lessons | Payment is expected at the beginning of each month. A minimum of 24 hours is required for cancellations, or the time reserved must be paid for. Monthly Lessons expire and must be used within the month of when payment is first received. If you would like to cancel or reschedule a lesson, you must do so at least 24 hours before your lesson time. Unused lessons from your monthly pack do not roll over to the following month.
Students will not be charged if the teacher must cancel a lesson.
While the following cases are extremely rare, students may be disenrolled from lessons, at the teacher’s discretion, if any of these issues persist: late or unpaid tuition, excessive absences or unprepared lessons, poor attitude or inappropriate behavior, continued lack of interest or effort, or other difficulties in working with the student or family.
